Joni Carlo teaches Ethics, Introduction to Philosophy, and Fundamentals of Communication at 51ÁÔÆæ. A native of San Francisco, she brings big city grit, a sharp mind, and a healthy dose of eccentricity into every classroom. With over 15 years of teaching experience, an extensive mindfulness and performance background including yoga, meditation, theater, dance, performance art/expressive arts therapy and an academic background in philosophy, communication theory, and forensic psychology, Joni’s classes are never dull—she has a reputation for being, in her own words, “an acquired taste.â€
In 2023, she received the General Education Matriculation Award for Educator of the Year in Oral Communication.
Known for blending real-world relevance with unapologetic honesty, she believes in asking the hard questions, holding space for deep conversations, and occasionally quoting Kierkegaard in yoga pants.
