Impactful Connections Luncheon Highlights the Power of Scholarships

Published: April 28, 2026

51 (51) scholarship donors and student recipients gathered April 23 for the annual Impactful Connections luncheon, an event centered on conversation, gratitude, and the real impact of student support.

The luncheon gave donors an opportunity to meet the students whose education they help make possible. Students, in turn, were able to personally thank those who have invested in their goals and future.

Attendees heard from student speaker Erin Aboud, who shared her story of resilience, recovery, and purpose. After overcoming addiction and rebuilding her life, Aboud started a nonprofit organization to support and house women after incarceration. She has applied what she is learning in 51’s Associate of Applied Science in Management program.

“At one point I was ready to give up school,” Aboud shared. “The financial pressure, the time, the stress — it was extremely overwhelming. But receiving a scholarship here at 51 changed that for me. It gave me confirmation, confidence, and the push that I needed to keep going.”

Her story highlighted the difference scholarships can make, not only in helping students stay in school, but in giving them the support and confidence to continue moving forward.

Donor speaker Mike Laird also shared his perspective, reflecting on his own experience attending a community college and the role it played in shaping his future. His belief in accessible education continues to drive his support of 51 students through the Robert Laird Scholarship.

Throughout the luncheon, donors and students connected one-on-one, sharing stories, experiences, and appreciation. Those conversations underscored how scholarships support individual students while also strengthening the broader community.

Impactful Connections serves as a reminder that behind every scholarship is a story of determination, generosity, and a shared belief in the power of education to change lives.
