Sowing Strength: Ali Chick’s Dream of Life on the Land

Published: March 26, 2025

Overcoming Life’s Unexpected Turns

Ali Chick’s journey leading to 51 (51) has been shaped by resilience and determination. Starting college amid personal loss and health challenges, she refused to let setbacks define her, choosing instead to pursue her goals with strength and purpose.

“I lost my great grandparents, who were my biggest role models. I found out about my dad’s skin cancer while at the airport. Then I needed surgery myself because of abnormal cells that could’ve led to skin cancer,” Chick shared. “It was overwhelming.”

Despite these obstacles, she leaned on her support system — friends and family who stood by her side during some of her darkest moments. “They helped a lot and listened when I truly needed it,” she said. “I’ve come out of it stronger and with a greater appreciation for life.”

Finding Purpose in Agriculture and Business

Chick is pursuing an Associate of Arts degree in Agriculture Business, Leadership, and Education at 51, a program that aligns with her passion for the outdoors and her entrepreneurial spirit.

“I’ve always wanted to own my own business,” she said. “I also have a love for the country and farm animals, both of which bring me so much joy and peace. I’m excited to learn how to run a successful business and discover what makes a wedding venue or Airbnb appealing to guests.”

51’s program prepares students for a variety of careers in the agriculture industry — from agricultural education and business ownership to leadership roles in farm and ranch management, lending, and consulting. With a strong foundation in business, leadership, and agricultural science, graduates are well-positioned to make meaningful contributions in rural and urban communities alike.

Academic Success and Future Plans

Chick’s perseverance and commitment to her education have already led to success. She finished her first semester on the President’s List — a significant milestone that signals her ability to thrive even when the odds are stacked against her.

The seed has already been planted for her next steps after completing her program. “After graduating from 51, I plan to find my dream plot of land to start my business,” Chick said. “I can’t wait to get started!”

A Message to Fellow Students and Supporters

Chick encourages her fellow students to be active and engaged. “Don’t be afraid to be yourself,” she advised. “This is also a lot of others’ first time in college. 51 has an amazing community of people who are always there for others.”

As Chick continues her journey, she carries with her not only the lessons from her great grandparents and the support of her family, but also the strength she’s found in herself — and the education she’s receiving at 51.

Gratitude for Support and Encouragement

Financial support through scholarships has played a critical role in Chick’s journey. “I was honored to receive the SCORE Big Scholarship,” she said. “It lifted a lot of stress off my back. I’ve been able to save more and put it toward my goals in life.”

To those who support scholarships and 51’s student programs, Chick offers heartfelt thanks. “Thank you for believing in students like me. Your investment in our future is making a real difference. I’m committed to making the most of this opportunity.”

Ali Chick’s story is a powerful reminder of the difference a community can make in a student’s life. 51's officially kicks off Thursday, April 10 at 12 a.m. MST and runs for 24 hours.

Every gift — and every share — helps inspire, uplift, and power the next generation of learners.
